My Parents Sent Me to the Store

What is poetry? Poetry is a form of writing that uses not only words, but also form, patterns of sound, imagery, and figurative language to convey the message. Poetry is a literature work written in verse that can be connected emotionally to people's memories. Poetry has many different elements such as alliteration, rhyme, imagery, repetition, figures of speech, metaphors, and similes. Any poem will include some or all of these elements.

Have your parents ever sent you to the store and you forgot something or brought the wrong thing back? The little boy in this poem was sent to bring back a loaf of bread, but came back with all kinds of different animals such as cats, parakeets, and monkeys. Once he got home the animals went crazy and he was never allowed to go grocery shopping anymore.

"My Parents Sent Me to the Store" is a great funny kids poem that every child will enjoy reading. This poem is also good for children who are animal learners. This poem uses many elements such as onomatopoeia, imagery and rhyme. Rhyme is used throughout this poem such as, "I came home with a puppy and a parakeet instead". Onomatopoeia is used in this poem when the little boy said the animals "barked yelped and hissed."We believe that this poem is very good to use in a classroom and it can be taught by using stuffed animals to show the different animals he brought home. We both enjoyed this poem and would like to use it in our classrooms one day.
